Warning signs of addiction
Although the two terms may be occasionally interchanged, it is important to make a clear distinction between signs of addiction and addiction symptoms. While signs can be perceived by the outer world, symptoms are only experienced by the addicted person.
Signs of addiction may be subtle at first and tried to be explained away using common excuses. However, they become more and more clear as the addiction progresses and becomes stronger. These warning signs can vary depending on the type of substance abuse, but some that may be present across multiple types include the following:
Physical signs:
- Sudden weight loss or weight gain.
- Persistent cough.
- Eye pupils smaller or larger than usual.
- Bloodshot eyes.
- Increased body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure.
- Changes in sleep patterns.
- Unusual smell on breath or body.
- Constant tremors.
- Diminished coordination.
- Deterioration of physical appearance.
- Slurred speech.
Behavioral signs:
- Moods swings and increased irritability.
- Constant secretiveness and lying.
- Changes in friend group and secretiveness about new peers.
- Personality changes.
- Poor performance at the workplace or school.
- Constant anxiety.
- Occurrence of panic attacks.
- Difficulty in concentrating.
- Increased defensiveness and sensitivity.
- Loss of interest and lack of motivation for old activities and hobbies.
- Neglect of responsibilities.
- Withdrawal from close family members.
Naturally, the presence of any of these signs in a person's behavior and appearance is not a certain indicator of drug abuse. Some of these signs can also be present during times of normal difficulty or transition (e.g. anxiety). Teenagers are also prone to having normal mood swings and difficulty in concentrating. In fact, most of the behavioral signs listed above are related to normal teen behavior. This is why a concerned family member or friend should always try to discern the actual causes for sudden changes in mood or appearance before jumping to any conclusions based on potential signs of addiction.
