How to cope with drug addiction

Many people coping with addiction think that the most difficult step towards drug recovery is finding out how to cope and control their urges to abuse substances. In order to achieve this, the person must understand these urges in a clear and realistic manner, without letting them getting distorted or blown out of proportion. For instance, some individuals may perceive these urges as simply unbearable and think that they will not go away unless they are fulfilled. In reality, although these urges may be very uncomfortable, they are certainly not unbearable and will not drive you crazy. The most important thing to remember is that these urges will eventually go away if you just wait them out. If the person has been struggling with addiction for a considerable period of time, it is completely natural that these urges will become very strong during the first days of abstinence, but they will reach a peaking point and start subsiding from there on.

A recovering addict should not feel guilty about having strong urges and not knowing how to cope with them at first. The first step is to detach oneself from the urge once it appears and observe it in an objective manner. Effective techniques include remembering the great benefits that can be obtained from beating the addiction, carrying a list of the negative effects that the substance has had in your life, and engage in a distracting activity that will take your attention away from the urge. Once this is accomplished, you can redirect your attention and focus to the previous activity you were performing when the urge appeared.

A popular strategy when dealing with addiction is simple avoidance, although this is a not an ideal approach at and is at best a temporary solution. During the initial stages of recuperation, a recovering addict should certainly avoid any situation that might be considered risky, for example going out with old friends that are also struggling with drug addiction. But still, it is impossible to avoid every situation that may be deemed risky, and the urges may also appear suddenly out of the blue without an specific trigger, which is why the recovering addict must be ready and know how to cope and confront these situations at any given time.
